The world is a dangerous place, Memphis especially so, and more people are taking steps to protect themselves. At the start of 2009 there were almost 33,000 permit holders in Shelby County. This year there are 38,000 permit holders, an increase of 16 percent.

Two recent crimes, one in which a burglar shot a homeowner and the other a knife-wielding man shot and killed by a potential victim, symbolize what has driven more and more people to get gun permits.

Chip Holland, training director at Range USA, said handgun permits could protect when law enforcement can not.

"When you need the police the most, they're not going to be able to be there," Holland said.

Hope for the best. Prepare for the worst.

The 2nd Amendment Isn't About Hunting

Man goes off meds, threatens to stab "numerous people" in a parking lot, then went after the wrong guy:

Witness Lakisha Gorman said, "He was running up to different people trying to stab them and he ran up to that dude's car as he was pulling out of the driveway and he had a baby in the car with him and he just started trying to stab the dude and the dude pulled a gun out and shot him." . . .

Witnesses say the shooter stayed on the scene until police arrived. Gorman said, "When police pulled up he laid his gun on the ground and handed them a gun permit or drivers license."

Investigators say the man threatening to stab people died at the scene, still holding the knife in his hand.

I feel for both individuals involved, but it is good news that detectives are saying that it looks like a justified shooting and no charges will be brought.

Another example of why the Second Amendment isn't about hunting.
